April 12, 2009 (Sunday): 09.00-12.00 hrs Paper-1 14.00-17.00 hrs Paper-2 All Indian and Foreign Nationals seeking admission to the above-mentioned institutes must appear in JEE.
Reservation of Seats:
1. 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST candidates with relaxed qualifying norms. Some SC/ST candidates, who do not qualify in JEE-2009, may be offered admission to the Preparatory Course of one-year duration provided.
(i) seats are available,
(ii) Candidates satisfy minimum norms, and(iii) Candidates have not undergone the Preparatory Course earlier. Candidates successfully completing the Preparatory Course will be offered direct admission to the first year in the academic year 2010-11.2. For OBC Candidates belonging to non-creamy layer, 18% Seate are reserved in each programme in the older IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Khanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee), IT - BHU, Varanasi and ISMU, Dhanbad, and 27% seats are researved in each program in the new IITs (Bhubaneswar, Gandhinager, Hyderabad, Patna, punjab and Rajesthan) candidates belonging to this category are admitted on the basis of a relaxed criterion
3. 3% for PD including leprosy-cured candidates, who are otherwise fit to pursue the course and who qualify for admission under relaxed norms relevant for this category
Preferential Allotment of Seats:
Two seats in each institute are preferentially allotted to children of defence/ paramilitary personnel killed or permanently disabled in action during war peacetime operations and who qualifyin the General Category.
IIT JEE 2009 Eligibility
A candidate has to satisfy ALL the eligibility conditions given below:
- A candidate can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years. Those who have appeared in JEE in 2007 or earlier are not eligible for appearing in JEE-2009.
- Candidates appearing in JEE-2009 should have either passed the qualifying examination in 2008 or should be appearing in 2009. They should also satisfy the specific eligibility criteria in the qualifying examination. Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination before October 1, 2007 are not eligible to write JEE-2009.
- Candidates should meet the age requirements given below.Candidates should NOT have accepted admission by paying full fees at any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi or ISMU, Dhanbad, through earlier JEE.
Qualifying Examination:
Candidates applying for JEE-2009 should have either completed or should be appearing in 2009 in any one of the following qualifying examinations.
- The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi; etc.
- Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
- Final Examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
- General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
- High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University.
- Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in any foreign country recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to the 10+2 system.
- H.S.C. Vocational Examination.
- Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.
- 3 or 4-year Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.
In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.
Eligibility Criteria in Qualifying Examination
Candidates belonging to the GE and DS categories must secure 60% or more marks in aggregate in their Qualifying Examination. Candidates belonging to the SC, ST, and PD categories must secure 55% or more marks in aggregate in the Qualifying Examination. The percentage of marks awarded by the Board will be treated as final. If the Board does not award the percentage of marks, it will be calculated based on the marks obtained in all subjects listed in the mark sheet.
If any Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying the equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of counselling. In case such a certificate is not provided by the candidate, then the decision of the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) regarding his/her eligibility shall be final.
Important Notes
1. Those candidates who will be appearing in the qualifying examination in 2010 or later are not eligible to apply for JEE-2009.
2. All provisional admissions to candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in the year 2009 will stand cancelled, if the proof of having passed the Qualifying Examination, as per the eligibility criteria specified above is not submitted to the concerned Institute latest by September 30, 2009. If a Board normally declares the results of the qualifying examination after 30th September of each year, students of such Boards are advised to attempt JEE in the following year.
3. All admissions are subject to verification of facts from the original certificates/documents of the candidates. If an applicant is found ineligible at a later date even after admission to an Institute, his/her admission will be cancelled. The decision of the Joint Admission Board of JEE-2009 regarding the eligibility of any applicant shall be final.

Age Requirements
For GE and OBC categories, only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1984, are eligible to appear in JEE-2009. For SC, ST, and PD categories, candidates who were born on or after October 01, 1979, are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the High School/first Board/Pre-University Certificate will be taken as authentic. If the high school certificate does not mention the date of birth, provide a suitable document indicating the date of birth along with the application.
Candidates must produce this certificate in original as a proof of their age at the time of counselling, failing which they will be disqualified.
Physical Fitness:
All qualified candidates will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner in the prescribed format that will be made available to them at an appropriate time. They will be admitted only if they are physically fit for pursuing a course of study at the participating institutes.
IIT JEE 2009 Pattern of Examination
Question Papers
There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
Questions in these papers will be of objective type, which are to be answered on a specially designed machine-gradable sheet (ORS - Optical Response Sheet) using HB pencils only. Incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks.Candidates can opt for Question Papers either in English or in Hindi. This option should be exercised while filling the application form. It cannot be changed at any later stage.
Visually impaired candidates, on request, will be provided with question papers with 20% enlarged font.
Calculating Aids
Use of log tables and any electronic calculating aids are NOT permitted in JEE-2009.
Aptitude Test for B.Arch. and B.Des.
Candidates called for counselling and desirous of joining the B.Arch. and B.Des. courses will be required to qualify in an Aptitude Test to be conducted at each counselling institute on June 11 and June 15, 2009.
The test will consist of one paper of three hours duration - from 10:00 to 13:00 hrs. Candidates who fail to qualify in the Aptitude Test will not be eligible for admission to either B.Arch. or B.Des. courses.
Question papers for aptitude test for B.Arch and B.Des will be in English only. The candidate should write the test only once, either on June 11 or June 15, 2009.
IIT JEE 2009 Application Form
1. A candidate can submit application either on-line through internet or off-line through paper application.
(A) Off-line: A candidate can buy an application form with information brochure from any one of the designated branches of banks by paying Rs. 500/- for SC/ST/PD/Female candidates (Yellow Colour envelope) or Rs.1000/- for all other candidates (White Colour envelope).
The Information brochure contains details regarding application procedure, syllabus of JEE, examination centres, courses available at various institutions, counselling, fee structure and other relevant information about JEE-2009.
(B) On-line: For online submission of applications, visit any of the websites given below and carefully follow the instructions given therein.
Application material can also be obtained, by sending a demand draft along with two self-addressed slips, from the "Chairman, JEE", IIT Bombay, Mumbai-400 076; IIT Delhi, New Delhi - 110 016; IIT Guwahati, Guwahati - 781 039; IIT Kanpur, Kanpur - 208 016; IIT Kharagpur, Kharagpur- 721 302; IIT Madras, Chennai - 600 036. The demand draft of amount appropriate to category/gendermust be drawn on any Nationalised Bank in favour of "Chairman, JEE" of the respective IIT payable at the corresponding city. Candidates applying from abroad should remit the amount in Indian Rupees. Application material will be sent by Ordinary Post. IITs will not be responsible for any loss or postal delay.
